Dr. Shagets specializes in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. After graduating from Parkwood High School as a first honor student of his class in 1969, he attended the United States Air Force Academy for four years and graduated in the upper 10% of his class. He then attended St. Louis School of Medicine and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, a medical fraternity honoring top individuals in their class. Dr. Shagets completed his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and then did a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Iowa. He was assigned to Wilford Hall United States Air Force Medical Center in 1983 and served as a member of the teaching faculty in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Head and Neck Oncology. During that time, he occupied positions that included instructor, residency program director and interim department chairman. The tour of duty at Wilford Hall offered a great breadth of experience for Dr. Shagets as he had the opportunity to care for armed forces personnel and government employees transported by MEDEVAC to the facility from all over the world.
Dr. Shagets is board-certified in otolaryngology by the American Board of Otolaryngology, as well as in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He scored the year’s highest combined oral and written score on his examination, and was awarded the prestigious Jack Anderson Award for that achievement.
